The Makhado sub-region of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) called on the Mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli, to axe the two full time councillors this week. This is according to a council resolution that the council must consist of only four full-time councillors.
The resolution, which was taken in December last year, stated that only the mayor, chief whip, the speaker and the portfolio head of technical services be appointed as full-time members of the Council.
According to the secretary of the ANCYL Makhado Sub Region, Chris Mulaudzi, the league is calling on the mayor to implement the council resolution as a matter of urgency.
“We as the ANCYL Makhado Sub-Region have taken a resolution and want answers from the mayor as to why the resolution is not being implemented? Council resolutions need to be respected and implemented. As young people of the Makhado Municipality, we are saying that the two councillors must be axed with immediate effect. This will also save the taxpayers money,” he said.
Mulaudzi said that they would always make sure that the people received services from all spheres of government and that taxpayers’ money was not wasted.
“As the future of this country, we are going to make sure that the two full-time councillors, who are just sitting there, receive an early Christmas present by being axed as full-time councillors. They must receive their last salary as full-time councillors at the end of this month,” said Mulaudzi, adding that council will be able to cope with just four full-time councillors instead of six. The four full-time councillors said to remain in council are Mayor Luruli, the speaker, Joan Hoorzuk, the chief whip, Joe Rikhotso, and the head of technical services, David Mutavhatsindi.
As far as the ANCYL is concerned, the fate of the head of the portfolio committee for community services, Lindiwe Lowani, and the head of portfolio committee for land affairs, Albert Muvhumbe, hangs in the balance.
Attempts to reach Muvhumbe and Lowani about the council’s decision were unsuccessful.
When contacted for comment, Mayor Mavhungu Luruli confirmed that the resolution had indeed been taken, but there was no time frame specified for when the resolution had to be implemented. “The council will consider taking a decision after a budget review process had been conducted. We don´t know what will happen after the budget review and it does not mean that the two coun-cillors will be axed. The review will guide us in this regard,” she said.
