Why not have bilingual editions?

News  Date: 18 December 2009

I would like to say congratulations on the local newspapers; it is good for us as it brings us news of what is happening in our area.

I was wondering if you could publish a complete English and a complete Afrikaans version of the paper as many of the articles are in Afrikaans and that is the important information and I am sure many other people who do not understand nor read Afrikaans miss out a lot of information.

My suggestion is that say you print 3000 copies, why don’t you print half in English and half in Afrikaans. I hope my suggestion is taken into consideration. If it is viable, why not run a questionnaire in the pa-per asking people what they think about the idea and from there you can see if it is viable or not.

Thank you for you letter and suggestion Cassim. Printing a duplicate English and Afrikaans version of the Zoutpansberger is, however, not practical. The Zoutpansberger has always been a dual medium publication with articles being printed in the language it is received from our correspondents or journalists. Re-writing all these articles will just be too time-consuming and not cost effective. I hope you understand. (Andries van Zyl: News Editor)
