MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) - Mrs Gwen Muirhead, well-known pioneer of the area, passed away on 5 March at the age of 86. She had a full M.O.T.H. funeral on March 8.
Gwendoline Frances Mavor, born on December 1, 1917, served her country as a transport driver in Egypt during the Second World War. When she returned to South Africa, she met Ossie Muirhead, who had also served in Egypt and Italy during the war.
The couple married and were pioneer farmers in banana planting in the Levubu area. On their farm, Schoonuitzicht, they also had a dairy herd, which the hard-working Gwen tended to. She kept this up until close to the time that she passed away, due to heart problems. Gwen was known for her sharp mind, right up to her death.
Gwen joined the Memorable Order of Tin Hats, where she held office as adjutant for 25 years and also as district adjutant for 10 years. She was always at the forefront when there was any help needed or charity work required. She lived by the M.O.T.H. motto: True Comradeship, Mutual Help and Sound Memory. M.O.T.H. members came from near and far to attend the funeral service, which was conducted at the M.O.T.H. building in Burger Street by Rev Tony Potter.
Her son Gordon, daughter-in-law, Joyce, and grandson Terry survive the late Gwen Muirhead.
