The dedicated top cop of the Levubu police was recently admitted as an advocate by the Thohoyandou High Court.
The station commissioner, Supt Humbulani Makhuvha, surprised his subordinates when he was admitted as an advocate. Makhuvha, who had always dreamed of becoming a lawyer, was born into a disadvantaged background at Malonga Village in the Tshimbupfe area on December 12, 1965.
He started his primary education at Malindini Primary in 1973 and went to Tshimbupfe Secondary from 1981 to 1985. After completing his matric in 1985, Makhuvha could not further his studies, because his unemployed parents could not afford university fees. He joined the Venda Police in 1987.
Although Makhuvha worked as a policeman, he always had a dream of being an advocate. He registered for a BA (Criminology) degree at the University of Venda and graduated in 1996. He completed his LLB degree at the University of South Africa (Unisa) in 2008.
According to Makhuvha, he wanted to set an example to both his subordinates and young people of Vhembe District that being born into a poor family did not limit one´s dreams and ambitions. “Things were difficult when I was growing up back in the village. I always told myself that one day I would realize my dream, and here I am now,” said Makhuvha.
He said it was through dedication and commitment that he managed to achieve and realize his dream. He urged police officers at his station not to limit themselves and to always work hard.
Makhuvha is married to Thizwilondi Mukwevho. They are blessed with three children, Khuliso, Phathutshedzo and Lindani. He is currently doing a Masters of Law degree (LLM), specializing in Labour Law.
