News  Date: 26 March 2004

ELIM – The Police in Waterval have opened a case of culpable homicide and another one of reckless driving against two motorists who had knocked down two 6-year-old boys in separate incidents in the Elim area on Tuesday.

The two incidents occurred about five kilometres from each other, the first along the Elim-Shirley road and the other on the Mbhokota-Chavani road.

According to the communications officer at the Elim-Waterval police station, Insp Maano Sadike, in the first incident, a 6-year-old boy of Ha-Chavani was knocked down by a vehicle, while crossing the Mbhokota-Chavani road. He said the victim died instantly and a case of culpable homicide has been opened against the driver.

"The police and emergency services were still attending the incident at Ha-Chavani, when another 6-year-old boy from Shirley was struck by a car on the Elim–Shirley road." he said. Sadike said that this young boy is in a stable condition in the Elim Hospital. A case of reckless driving has been opened against the driver.

He emphasised that in both incidents, the drivers immediately stopped and that no hit-and-run cases are being investigated, as was rumoured.

The names of the victims will be disclosed after their next of kin have been contacted.
