The sewerage dilemma of Louis Trichardt has now been reported to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Sicelo Shiceka, and the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Patience Sonjica.
This is according to a media statement by the Democratic Alliance, dated January 26.
“The Democratic Alliance remains concerned regarding the ongoing sewerage spillages all over Louis Trichardt. Service delivery is non-functional in the whole area and people are put at risk with all the possibilities of health diseases that threaten this town and the community,” said DA Councillor of Makhado Municipality Brian du Plooy.
On October 15 last year, the Green Scorpions visited Louis Trichardt and held an investigation concerning the sewerage issues of the town. To date, no satisfactory answers could be given by the Green Scorpions to the DA.
Cllr Brian du Plooy and MP Desiree van der Walt of the DA met with officials of the Green Scorpion Unit in Polokwane on January 21.
“The reason given for the lack of satisfactory answers was that their department is understaffed, a situation which is unacceptable to the Democratic Alliance,” said Du Plooy.
As a result of this meeting, the sewerage problems of Louis Trichardt have been reported on national level, as well as to the MEC for Economic Development, Environment and Tourism, Mr Pitsi Moloto. The vacant positions in the department of the Green Scorpions have simultaneously been reported for immediate intervention.
“Proper and effective planning by capable and qualified personnel within the Makhado Municipality could solve the sewerage situation, but the incapability of officials in local, as well as provincial government, makes the sewerage problem chaotic,” states the DA.
