TSHIOZWI - A well-known police officer, Insp Tshimangadzo "Shimmy" Makatu, who was stationed at Tshilwavhusiku, died last week from the injuries he sustained when he accidentally shot himself while chasing an assailant.

According to the spokesperson of Vhembe district, Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, Makatu and other police members received a tip–off from members of the community about one of the men who had escaped from the Tshilwavhusiku Police Cells. The man was hiding at Madombidzha.

When the police reached the place, the man ran away into the bushes and started shooting at the police. It is alleged that Makatu, in an attempt to fire a warning shot, wounded himself.

Makatu was admitted to the Polokwane Hospital a month ago and died last Wednesday in the hospital. The suspect was shot dead on November 14 in Madombidzha by the police.

Makatu joined the police service 15 years ago. His wife, two daughters, a son and his father survive him.

Mushavhanamadi expressed his condolences to the Makatu family. He said Insp Makatu was a hard worker. He will be buried tomorrow (Saturday) at the Tshiozwi Cemetery. The service will start at 06:00.
