As part of the store´s social responsibility programme in the community it serves, Elim Spar has done it again by donating R20 000 to Malamulele´s Makhoma Boxing Amateur Club at a ceremony that was held at the club´s training centre last Friday. Elim Superspar store manager Mr Henk Jacobs handed a cheque of R20 000 to the chief executive officer of Makhoma Boxing Amateur Club. According to Jacobs, "This is a way of investing back into the community and bydoing so, we are also showing the importance of our customers to us by giving the little we have back to them," he said. He encouraged other businesspeople to emulate what they are doing for the community. Elim Superspar is continuously making changes in the community through sports and other activities. Despite this donation, the store also sponsors a boxing tournament that is held annually at the store´s parking area, where young people from all areas of the Vhembe District take part in the activities. According to Jacobs, the store had put aside R10 000 to sponsor the annual boxing tournament. "This is how we contribute in keeping young people busy, so that they don´t engage in criminal activities, drug and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and other bad things," said Jacobs. The chief executive officer, who is also a trainer and founder of Makhoma Boxing Amateur Club, Mr Eric Baloyi, said that he was very proud of the good things which Elim Superspar was doing in the community. "We are humbled and appreciate what Elim Superspar has done for us. We are happy now that we will be able to buy training equipment for our boxers. We are also promising to produce quality boxers, " he said. Makhoma Boxing Amateur Club has already produced professional boxers like Cassius Baloyi (IBF), Isaac Hlatswayo (IBO), Oscar Chauke (IBO) and Jeffery Mathebula (African Continental). Mirror also learnt that the boxing club was busy training five female boxers who are going to participate during the 2012 Olympic Games. The club received the donation at the same time that they were mourning the death of one of their boxers, Freedom Makhuvele (20). Makhuvele was laid to rest at Malamulele cemetery last Saturday.
