Cross-border driver shot dead in Musina

News  Date: 14 May 2010

A Zimbabwean cross-border driver was shot dead by three unknown suspects along the N1 in Musina, police have said. The SAPS spokesperson for Musina, Capt Sydney Ringane, said the incident occurred on Sunday, May 9 along the N1 highway near the offices of Musina FM. “The victim, a Zimbabwean, was travelling with two passengers. He was driving a Mazda bakkie, which was towing a trailer. On arrival at an area adjacent to the Musina FM offices, three armed men approached them and intercepted the car, ordering the victim to stop and demanding money. He resisted and one of the assailants shot him in the chest as he tried to flee and he died on the spot,” Ringane said. The suspects fled from the scene and the victim’s car then rammed into the Musina Municipality hall, which houses the local community radio station. The matter was reported to the police and the body of the driver was taken to the local government mortuary. Ringane could not release the name of the victim, saying they were yet to notify his next-of-kin. The suspects are still on the run and the police have launched a manhunt for them. "We are also appealing to community members to assist us with information that might lead to their arrest,” said the police spokesperson.
