Soccer fever is definitely not limited to the young and agile. In Vuwani, outside Thohoyandou, a 67-year-old gogo is proudly displaying her skills and teaching others the finer art of dribbling and passing. Gogo Mutshekwa "Mbesuma" Singo says she keeps herself healthy by training twice a day. She plays soccer, because she believes this is a good way of staying fit and it also relieves stress. She started off participating in sport when she was still very young. Her team mates were often young boys. Nowadays, her ambition is to establish more gogo soccer tournaments to keep the older gogo players busy. She started to play for a gogo soccer team in 2005, and joined teams like Tshimbupfe Old Stars and Vyeboom Hunter’s Stars. Because of her skills, she stole the hearts of many gogo soccer teams in the Vhembe District, but Tshino Hungry Lions has secured her services and she is now playing in their number six jersey. Because of her love for soccer, she is training and teaching young children how to play the game. She also trains and encourages them to take part in other activities, such as traditional dancing. “I’m happy because old aged people, in partnership with the Department of Health and Social Development in Limpopo, are participating in different activities to keep them healthy. Local clinics are also treating us by checking for high blood pressure and offering medical treatment,” gogo Singo said.
