"I nearly killed my baby"

News  Date: 12 March 2004

NNGWEKHULU - A one-year-old baby girl from Nngwekhulu in the Vuwani area in Venda is suffering from extreme burn wounds she sustained in December last year.

It is reported that Ndoda Ramulifho had sustained severe burn wounds, especially in her face, during an incident that took place at a shack in Rustenburg, in North-West Province. Ndoda was suffering from flu and her mother, Rendani Ramulifho (19), boiled water and mixed with it an ointment and assisted her baby to inhale the hot steam. She had undressed the baby and covered them with a blanket. In the process, the baby screamed without stopping. After a few minutes, her mother removed the blanket and found that the baby had been severely burnt by the hot steam.

She and her boyfriend then took the baby to the Brits Hospital. The baby was admitted for three months. At that stage, Ndoda was only six months old.

The mother of the baby, Ms Rendani Ramulifho, told Mirror that she was not well informed about the usage of hot steam. "I'm totally shocked about what I have done. I nearly killed my baby, due to a misunderstanding. I treated my baby like an adult. I'm pleading for help to assist my baby because her mouth and left eye are not functioning normally."
