R300 000 damage due to "ignorance"

News  Date: 12 March 2004

MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) - The public is requested not to remove "road closed" signs or use the roads in town currently under construction.

The one shoulder of Kruger Street near the station is under construction, but during the weekend the road signs were removed and traffic moved onto that part of the road, causing damage of about R300 000. In particular buses, minibuses, bakkies and even a municipal truck were guilty of using this road, which is under construction.

According to the site agent of Mega Rank Joint Venture, Mr Seth da Gama, the road now has to be stripped and thrown with cement again. The road will stay closed for a "curing" period of three days to allow compaction.

Besides Kruger Street, other roads under construction are Grobler and Vorster Streets. The cooperation of residents is vital to the success of the construction and no drivers should drive on the closed roads. Drastic steps will follow when the road signs, which should bar the traffic, are removed.
