Dynamos coach arrested for rape

News  Date: 08 October 2010

Dynamos FC´s head coach, Phillip Mbofana, spent the past week in jail in Polokwane after being arrested on a charge of rape.

Polokwane police spokesperson, Captain Mohlaka Mashiane confirmed to Mirror that a rape case had been opened against Dynamos coach, Philip Mbofana (40) last Tuesday and that he appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate Court the following morning. He was refused bail.

Capt Mashiane said Mbofana is still in custody and was scheduled to appear in court again on October 7. He said the case was opened by a 27-year-old woman. The incident allegedly happened at the Golden Pillows Hotel in Polokwane shortly before the team played against the University of Pretoria in Giyani. The two booked a room in the hotel and this is also where the woman alleges the rape took place.

Dynamos PRO, Joe Mbiza did not want to express an opinion on the matter. "I know nothing about Mbofana’s case, because I am far away. What I know is that he had some Home Affairs problems,” he said. He confirmed that the former head of youth development at Platinum Stars, Allan Freeze took over the coaching duties. Freeze used to be the assistant coach. "The team is training as usual," he said.

The lack of a head coach did not seem to influence the team´s playing abilities too much and Dynamos beat United FC 1-0 the past weekend at the ABSA Stadium. This is their first win in an away match this season. The long awaited victory promoted the Giyani outfit to 7th position in the National First Division with 3 points after 4 matches

The Zimbabwean Mbofana was roped into the Dynamos camp to replace fellow countryman, Shepherd Murape as their new head coach. Mbofana has agreed to a one year contract with an option of renewing based on the performance of the team. Mbofana is a former Zimbabwe Under-20 and Under-23 coach and has in recent years coached Swaziland clubs, Mbabane Highlanders, XI Men in Flight and Pigg´s Peak Bush Bucks. Back at home he once coached the now defunct Mhangura.

Dynamos FC will resume its National First Division campaign on 23 October against FC AK.
