Two young girls drown in Shikari dam

HLANGANANI – Two young girls who resided at Hlanganani drowned in the Shikari Dam, while fetching water from the dam on Monday afternoon.

According to the police statement, it is alleged that Botomi Tivani (15) and Tsepo Maswanganyi (14) were sent by their parents to fetch water from the dam for religious purposes, on the day of the incident.

While busy filling the containers, the two slipped from the bank of the dam, fell into the water and drowned. Residents managed to remove Botomi's body later that afternoon.

The search went on throughout the night and Tsepo's body was only found on Tuesday morning.

In another incident, a ten-year-old boy, Rodney Kapa, went missing last Friday afternoon. He was last seen in the company of his friends.

The statement indicates that the boy's friends were asked about his whereabouts and they all stated that they did not have any knowledge of it. It was only on Tuesday morning that some of his friends revealed that Tsepo had drowned in the Molototsi River near Hamatipane village last Friday.The search for the boy's body started on Tuesday morning and was still on at the time of going to press.

In the other incident that took place at Hasikgopo village dam on Tuesday afternoon, a 19-year-old boy, Mayike Maake, drowned while swimming in the dam with friends. The incident took place at about 17:00. The search for the boy's body was still on at the time of going to press. The police have appealed to the people not to let their children play inside or cross rivers without their elders' supervision.
