Hyenas have descended on Makakavhule and surrounding villages along the Limpopo River outside Beit Bridge where they are reportedly terrorizing villagers.
The local councillor, Mr Joseph Itani Muleya, confirmed the development, saying the animals were killing livestock. “The hyenas are causing havoc in Makakavhule area where they are killing villagers’ cattle and donkeys while the animals are grazing in the bush. In fact, I recently lost two calves after they were attacked by the hyenas,” he said.
He said the main affected villages include Umzingwane, River Ranch resettlement area and Makakavhule. “The hyenas are coming from the River Ranch Grazing scheme and this has become an issue of grave concern which needs urgent attention. However, I have since brought the matter before the council’s committee on natural resource management,” said Muleya.
