While the rest of the country was commemorating Human Rights Day, residents of Madombidzha and the surrounding villages of both the Sinthumule and Kutama areas celebrated the day in style by engaging in a health walk to encourage members of the community to live a healthy life.

The 4.5 km walk started from the nearby Tshiozwi Village to the Muromani Surgery at Madombidzha. The elderly, who came in numbers to the event, were treated for free at the surgery. Members of the community were also encouraged to check for diabetes and high blood pressure, and HIV/Aids testing and counseling were offered throughout the day.

The theme for this year´s Human Rights Day Celebration was "Restoring Dignity".

According to the spokesperson for the Muromani Surgery, Mr Samson Mpilo, the event was meant to encourage members of the community to take good care of their lives through excercising. "We wanted to make a contribution to restoring dignity to the residents. Engaging in excercising can also release stress and prevent other illnesses," he said. He said that they were also planning to have this kind of activity once a year, annually.

The police were also given a platform to encourage young people to refrain from engaging in criminal activities and focus on their studies.

According to Dr Vincent Mpilo of Muromani Surgery, the activity was also part of his contribution to give back to the community where he was born. The Makhado Municipality mayor, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli, also attended the event. She said that it was good to see members of the community engaging in excercise for their health. She added that although the municipality had done a lot of things, she was aware that a lot of challenges were still facing the community it served.
