The saying that good wine mellows with age bears truth for singer Joseh Mbiza.
The multi-award winning singer, best known as Zozo, left many eating humble pie when he scooped a Sama for the Best Tshivenda Song in 2009 .
As if that was not enough, the singer, who has produced 12 albums so far, this year scooped another Sama - no mean feat for this former herdboy. “When I started music, I never thought I would one day rub shoulders with the best in the music arena. This award has humbled me and will steer me to greater heights. Just watch my soon-to-be-released album,” said Zozo boastfully.
He was born in Bulowayo, where his father worked as a labourer at the railways. "Life was good the at the time. But then came the break-up between my parents and I had to go to Chiredzi, where my grandmother raised me,” he said. He said life was bad there and that he lacked even the basics. This forced him to leave school very early.
“When I started music, I did not know it was to be my lifelong career. Here I am today, bagging awards which I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever achieve. This gives me more courage. I think this is a sign that I am doing a good job. I sing what is relevant to people’s lives, something that empowers them,” he said.
Zozo made a name for himself when he recorded his first music with Sengere Superbeat. What followed is the phenomenal success that steered him to where he is today. In 2004, he assembled a studio at Shayandima.
He has since helped many up-and-coming artists realize their dreams. One of his products, Ntshengedzeni Maligana, has gone on to win a Sama award. He is presently doing the final touches on his 13th album, Tshigotshanama, which will be released soon.
Elmon Tshikhudo started off as a photographer. He developed an interest in writing and started submitting articles to local as well as national publications.
