The Makhado Municipality´s mayor, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli, urged women to group themselves and start their own co-operatives. This was during the Women´s Month commemoration event that was held at the Samson Phophi Stadium in Vleifontein Township last Saturday.
Luruli said that poverty could be eradicated if women stood up for themselves and started their own initiatives. "Through co-operatives, poverty can be combated," she said. She reminded women that the government has created a platform for them and that what is left is for them is to act. Luruli warned women about the dangers of HIV/Aids. "Women must decide for themselves that they do not want to be infected by HIV/Aids," she said
Luruli further urged women to refrain from keeping quiet when they are being abused. "It is high time that women start acting against their abusers,” added Luruli. "Women must always communicate with their daughters with regard to sexual issues. Together we can prevent the spread of HIV/Aids,” she added. She also encouraged women to get tested, so that they know their status.
Luruli handed cheques of R25 000 each to nine women’s, people with disabilities and youth skills development projects. The projects includes Muthundinnyi Project for the Disabled, Nthabalala Agricultural Primary Co-operative and Tshanduko Mageu Project.
Luruli also handed-out sanitary towels to young girls and women from disadvantaged family backgrounds. They were sponsored by Premjee & Sons.
