Yet another bus accident in the Soutpansberg area left two people dead and several passengers injured during the early hours of Sunday morning (4 September).
The accident between the bus and an 18-wheeler truck took place on the N1 south near the Capricorn Toll Plaza.
According to the Makhado police, the bus was travelling towards Gauteng when the driver supposedly tried to overtake another vehicle. It then crashed into an oncoming truck. The accident happened around midnight on Sunday.
According to ER 24 spokesperson Derrick Banks, medical personnel found the truck driver and another passenger of the bus in a critical condition. Despite every effort by paramedics to stabilise them, both were declared dead on the scene of the accident. Banks confirmed that another six passengers sustained serious injuries and over 30 more suffered minor injuries.
Local police spokesperson Capt Maano Sadike said on Tuesday that the police were still investigating the cause of the accident. He added that police were looking into the possibility that the driver of the bus might have been tired and he urged motorists to rather stop for a break if they become tired.
At the time of going to press, the police were still trying to identify the deceased. It is believed that both were from Zimbabwe.
