South Africa´s reggae maestro, Colbert Mukwevho of the Harley and the Rasta Family fame, mesmerised fans and more especially disabled learners during a performance at Tshilidzini Special School at Shayandima outside Thohoyandou.
The well-known reggae star performed for free for the school. This was during the school´s 40th birthday celebrations held at the school´s premises on Friday, 9 September.
During his performance, Mukwevho, who in his formative years recorded and performed with stars like Brenda Fassie and Sello Chicco Twala, took the ecstatic fans on a musical journey. Sporting his trademark dreadlocks, he dished tracks from his famous albums, old and new, to the fans whocould not stop dancing.
Asked as to why out of all schools that were celebrating Casual Day he chose the one for the disabled, Mukwevho was quick to say that they had a special place in his heart. “I could have gone somewhere else, but I chose to be with these children. They are what they are not of their own will, but the will of God, but they remain people like us,” he said.
"I felt that I should contribute in one way or another and this is my humble contribution to the learners. I am very excited to be part of the celebrations,” he said.
Prince Ndwambi, himself disabled, said he approached Mukwevho and asked him to perform but made it clear that there was no money. He said he was very happy when Mukwevho agreed and said that he would contribute his services for free. "It is very rare for disabled learners to attend concerts, but Mukwevho´s presence here made our day," he said.
