“We had just left work after our night-shift session at about 05:00 on Saturday morning, when we saw this car coming at a very high speed on the N1 towards Musina town. It did not slow down at the traffic circle and the driver lost control and hit the fence of the Great North Plaza. The car then hit a high mast lamp, destroying it completely. After that, it rolled several times before coming to a standstill next to the road.”

This is how a security officer, an eyewitness who refused to give his name, described the accident that left one person injured over the weekend.

“After it rolled, three occupants got out of the car and ran away towards the railway line. The fourth occupant, who was injured, was taken to Messina Hospital for treatment. These people were lucky to survive, because the car was travelling at a very high speed,” he added.

The security officer said when they approached the car, they saw liquor bottles inside. “Even the one who was taken to the hospital looked intoxicated. I suspect that these guys had partied all night."

W/O Peter Mudau confirmed that a case of reckless driving is under investigation at the Musina SAPS. He urged motorists to observe the rules of the road in order to be safe this festive season.
