Matric maths exam paper leaked in Giyani

News in brief  Date: 02 November 2016

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that the Grade 12 Mathematics Paper 2 has been leaked at a school in Giyani.

Last year the Life Sciences Paper 2 was leaked at Marude High in Thohoyandou.

It was stated that pupils at a few schools in the Mopani district had had access to the maths paper before it was written on Monday. Departmental spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga said that they were making good progress in their investigations. He added that the department would implement a system where a rewrite for all those implicated be administered. “The Department takes this security breach in a serious light and has since involved law-enforcement agencies‚ the Hawks and the SA Police Service‚ to swiftly investigate this matter‚” said  Mhlanga.

“A case has been opened with the police. Teams from DBE and province are working together with law enforcement to get to the bottom of this matter, so that we can take appropriate action,” he added.

To further ensure that the security of exam papers is not compromised, the department has established an investigative task team comprised of the Department of Basic Education, the South African Qualifications Authority and Umalusi. “We appeal to learners‚ parents and members of the community to report any incidents of papers being leaked and expose those behind the acts‚” he said.

More details will be made available as the investigation continues.
