Two suspected rhino poachers arrested

Two suspected rhino poachers were arrested yesterday afternoon (13 September) during a tactical joint police operation.

This operation was conducted along the N1 north between Musina and Louis Trichardt. Team members from the police, crime intelligence unit, border and stock theft units and Tracker participated in the event.

The team intercepted two suspects, aged 38 and 59, believed to be part of a rhino poaching syndicate.

According to the provincial police spokesperson, LT-Col Moatshe Ngoepe, the two suspects were on their way to poach rhinos on a nearby game farm. During the arrest police confiscated a 375 hunting rifle, nine rounds of ammunition, one silencer, a knife and the vehicle the suspects were driving. It is suspected that the vehicle was stolen somewhere else.

Both suspects are expected to appear in the Messina Magistrate Court today.
