Sixteen-year-old Washu Hlabioa of Thohoyandou was crowned Miss Teen International South Africa during the prestigious Miss Teen Universe SA 2022’s crowning ceremony, held in Durban on 13 March this year. She will be representing South Africa in India in November 2022.
Hlabioa is a Grade-11 pupil at PEMPS College in Polokwane. She has 20 different titles to her name of beauty pageants she has won. Her deepest passion lies in helping to fight poverty, and especially raising awareness for people living with disabilities. She now has the opportunity to achieve her dream of seeing people with disabilities being treated with love and respect, and simply being treated as equals.
“When disabled people go out in public, they are often stared at. Kids are often terrified of them. I believe it is time that the families of disabled people stop hiding them from the world and start actively socialising with them. They are people like you and me. They are intelligent and smart in their own way, but sadly, because of their physical impairments, they are constantly discriminated against,” says Hlabioa. “If a disabled child is mentally stable, it will not be necessary to take them to a special school. Instead, they will be able to not only mingle with society at large but also do their part to contribute positively to our world.”
Hlabioa has proven beyond doubt that she is a much-needed pillar of society, influencer and inspirational future leader. She expresses her gratitude to all those who supported her on her journey to create an impact in her community and beyond.
You too can partner with Hlabioa in her efforts to try and lessen the blow of poverty and make a difference in the lives of people living with disabilities. For sponsorship, donations, or any form of participation, email her to [email protected] or simply send a WhatsApp text to 082 413 2691.
