Phungo All Stars beat Super Eagles 3-1 in a Vodacom Promotional League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The game was played under protest. Super Eagles lodged a protest with the referee, Mr Olani Kwinda, alleging that four players of Phungo, namely Tondani Nkhumeleni, Lutendo Mulaudzi, Dion Phiri and Hulisani Mathugana, were not properly registered with their team.

Shortly after the start of the match, the speedy forward of Super Eagles, Tabang Mashao, missed a sitter with the Stars’ keeper, Reason Mbedzi, already beaten. Mashao could not believe his eyes when his half-volley went a little wide. The score was 0-0 when the referee blew the half-time whistle.

Phungo approached the second half with more self-confidence. They were awarded a penalty after Daniel Kganago handled the ball within the box. A substitute, Justice Rasebotse, scored from the white spot.

Dion Phiri of All Stars went into the referee’s book, following a dangerous tackle on Tsepo Matlala. The coach for Eagles, Mr Abel Shongwe, was not happy with the referee’s decision to warn Phiri with a yellow card. He argued that the infringement was severe and that it warranted a red card. During the altercation, Shongwe used abusive words towards the referee and he was given his marching orders.

Phungo replaced Aphane Stemmer and Charles Melenyane with Mashudu Nemakhavhani and Justice Rasebotse respectively. They increased the margin in the 67th minute. Ivan Mahangwahaya forced his way through the defence of Eagles and scored easily.

The visitors lost touch in the middle of the park and Stars capitalised and scored their third goal. Ivan Mahangwahaya blasted in a rocket, following a square pass from Justice Rasebotse. Super Eagles reduced the margin via Makgatho Masete nine minutes before the final whistle.
