After finishing the league programme in the eighth position in their debut season of the Vodacom Promotional League, Basel Football Club felt that they had a good reason to celebrate. Their celebration party was held at the Nandoni Dam picnic site last Saturday evening.
During the ceremony, the team’s head coach, Mr Justice Mtileni, said that the season had been full of challenges. He indicated that the team had been languishing at the bottom of the log after losing their first five league matches when he was given the responsibility of taking over as the head coach.
Several players were honoured during the ceremony. Kabelo Khoma was presented with R500, as he was nominated the best acquisition for the season. The team’s goalkeeper, Mashudu Nemakhavhani, was the most improved player and received R500.
The team’s vastly experienced player, Japhta Mabosho, received two awards during the ceremony. He scored the most awesome goal in the season, apart from the fact that he was the team’s top goal scorer. He scored 11 goals in the season, despite the fact that he did not feature in some of the games as a result of injury. He was presented with R1 500.
The most disciplined player and the players’ player of the season award went to Khaukanani “Villa” Mawela. He also received R1 500. The team’s captain, Tshifhiwa “Gama” Ramatsea, was nominated the player of the season. He received R1 100. The chairman’s award of R1 000 went to Tsepo “DJ” Phelwane.
During the ceremony, the managing director of the team, Mr Shandukani Nesengani, said that finishing the league programme in the eighthposition was a great achievement for his team, considering the fact that it was their first season in the Vodacom Promotional League.
