The executive mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Cllr Joshua Matlou, has officially launched the 2012 instalment of the charity cup in style.

The launch was held at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg.

When officially launching the tournament, Matlou said that the move to launch it in Johannesburg was a way of increasing the popularity of the games. “We have decided to come launch this event here in Gauteng, with the purpose of widening the scope of impact for this tournament beyond the borders of Mopani District and Limpopo.

The tournament will take place at the Giyani Stadium on 29 July 2012. The first game will feature Moroka Swallows against Baobab Zero Fake and the second game will see the tournament’s defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns, take on Supersport United.

The launch was attended by dignitaries from the Mopani District Municipality, the president of SAFA Mopani region and representatives from participating teams, Mamelodi Sundowns, Moroka Swallows, Supersport United and Baobab Zero Fake.

Matlou added that without the commitment of the participating teams, the tournament would have not grown to its current stature.  “We remain indebted to all the participating teams.  We are humbled by your commitment to the cause of charity. In you, we see the true epitome of ubuntu.”
