Muthelo FC came back from a 1-2 deficit and beat Makovha All Stars 11-10 in their last 16 match for the Vhembe Mayoral Cup Tournament at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.
No goal was seen during the first 45 minutes, despite numerous attempts by both sides.
All Stars were the first to blow the trumpet. Their left winger, Mashudu Muthabeni, scored from the corner in the 54th minute. All Stars blundered by playing defensive football after the goal.
Muthelo replaced Conwell Shivambu with Lucky Funyufunyu in a bid to strengthen their striking force. Funyufunyu made his presence felt when he scored the equaliser three minutes after his introduction. He beat Stars’ keeper, Thiathu Munyai, with a ground cutter.
Makovha All Stars took the lead again in the 74th minute. Foster Ngoveni finished off a square pass from Mashudu Muthabeni, but Azwinndini Munyai scored the equalizer for Muthelo in the dying minutes.
All Stars confronted the referee angrily after the goal. They argued that the goal was scored from an offside position and that it was scored long after the regulation time had lapsed. The referee, Mr Avhasei Simba, stood firmly by his decision.
The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. Muthelo converted nine goals, while All Stars managed to score eight from the penalty spot.
