GIYANI – Wits University were lucky to escape with a draw in their Castle Premiership League match against Dynamos at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday. The two sides scored a goal each in the game.
Although two of their key players went into the referee's book in the opening minutes, Wits continued to fight as an organised team. The two players who were cautioned with cards for rough tackling were Cavin Winstanely and Jacob Mahoa.
Dynamos were playing against the direction of the wind in the first half, but managed to contain the students. The visiting side came close to scoring in the 24th minute. The assistant referee kept his flag down at the time when everyone was convinced that Gareth Devine's header has crossed the goal line. The scoreboard was still blank at half time.
The home side left Sandras Kamwenda in the dressing room and brought on Sello Ledingwane. The "Clever Students" came back strongly in the last half. They continued to mount pressure on the defence of the local lads despite the fact that the wind direction was not in their favour. They were the first to draw blood in the 55th minute.
Gareth Devine blasted in a loose ball after a scramble within the box. Dynamos replaced Luke Jukulile and Frank Makua with Joel Seroba and Lukas Maleka later in the game. That proved to be a clever move on the part of the Dynamos technical side. Their long awaited goal came in the 65th minute. Sello Ledingwane dribbled past two defenders in a row and beat the Wits keeper.
