While Chippa United were celebrating the fact that they managed to collect their first Absa Premiership League point away from home, Black Leopards’ reason to rejoice was that they had managed to maintain their unbeaten record.
The two teams met at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon and the match ended in a goalless draw.
While Lidoda Duvha enjoyed the greater share of ball possession in the first 20 minutes, the visitors from Cape Town created more scoring opportunities. It the 10th minute, Sbusiso Mnguni's shot went over the target from a free kick. Moments later, Mxolisi Ntshingila, who had a clear sight of the goal, ballooned the ball over the crossbar, much to the relief of the Leopards’ keeper, Ayanda Mtshali.
The captain of Chippa United, or The Chilli Boys as they are affectionately called, Gift Sithole, had a chance to put his side ahead in the 18th minute, but he failed to direct his header on target after the hosts had failed to clear their lines from a set piece.
The Leopards’ keeper, Ayanda Mtshali, was called upon to make a decent save just before the half-time break, tipping a dipping long-range effort from Diego Brown over the crossbar to leave the score locked at 0-0 at the interval.
Leopards approached the second half strongly. Their midfielder, Raymond Monama, almost opened the scoring in the 49th minute with a free kick thatbeat the nervous-looking keeper, Douda Kasay, but the ball bounced back after hitting the upright.
Rodney Ramagalela of Leopards was unfortunate in the 69th minute. He shot straight to the keeper, following a cross from Monama. The keeper of Chippa was able to turn the ball away from the goal for a corner kick.
Leopards continued to create chances right up to the dying minutes of the game, but they never did enough to stretch Kassay or the backline in front of him.
