The biggest field of Formula 1 boats in over five years – fifteen in all – will take to the waters for the 2002/3 season opener taking place at Tzaneen on Saturday, September 7.
The Coca-Cola Polox/Petroleum Tzaneen Powerboat Grand Prix will not only feature the fast paced action of the Formula 1 races but will also highlight the work of the National Ports Authority/Mercury Development Powerboat Class. This remarkable programme has been running for ten years and has trained hundreds of youngsters from local disadvantaged communities where the races are run in the basics of this exciting sport of powerboat racing. The success of the programme is due to the strong commitment of its sponsors the National Ports Authority and Mercury Outboard, as well as Formula 1 pilots who have given up their time to personally mentor the youngsters.
Other water-based activities include Junior Powerboat races and Formula 30 racing. The Grand Prix will also feature a host of exciting family orientated entertainment such as the Forest Fire Association Air Display and a netball tournament for disadvantaged children. There will also be a lot of kiddie's entertainment in the "Snowy Dowy Kiddies Corner", and music will prevail from the SA Brewery Gig Rig and beer garden while food stalls will showcase local crafts and foods. The local organisers are the Lions Tzaneen Letaba Club, and all proceeds will go towards community projects. Admission is R6 for scholars and R10 for adults.
