Athletes from all over the country will close the year in style when they battle for honours during the Thohoyandou 15km Challenge. It will take place on Saturday, 22 December.
In what is expected to be one of the best road races in Vhembe this year, more than 150 athletes will battle it out in a gruelling 15 km of mountainous terrain. The race has already attracted big names like the 2010 Two Oceans Marathon champion, Bethuel Netshifhefhe, Tsietsi Moshoeshoe from Lesotho and the holder of the 2011 Thohoyandou Challenge trophy, Azwinndini Lukhwareni.
The race starts from FNB Makwarela Stadium, will run through Thohoyandou Block G, Mavhunda Road via Mbaleni Cemetery and back to the stadium.
The organizer of the event, Mr Andrew Mavhona, who is the founder of the Thohoyandou Athletics Club, said plans were at an advanced stage. "We have polished our act and people can expect fireworks this year. We have managed to draw big names to this race, which will give it the stature it deserves."
The winners will receive cash prizes. The winner will receive R500, while the fifth prize is R100. Athletes can still register for the race and for more information they can phone Mavhona at 073 196 9245.
The race is sponsored by local businesses, Dr Lufuno Thivhafuni of Thohoyandou, Mbavhalelo Funeral Undertakers and Democratic Funeral Undertakers.
