This year, the mountain bike race of the PPC Kremetart Cycling Race on Sunday was hosted as a cross-country Olympic event.

Cross-country Olympic (XCO) is a popular mountain bike discipline which is the only form of mountain biking that is an Olympic sport.  XCO consists of lap racing around a short circuit containing various obstacles that must be negotiated. Apart from fitness, XCO also requires serious bike-handling skills.

This year’s mountain bike event in its new format, however, drew fewer entries than previous years. Still, the event was well supported, mostly by local riders.

Nicole van den Greft, from Polokwane but riding in the P&L Cycling Club’s racing jersey, and CP van Wyk, also from P&L, clocked the fastest lap times during the event. Nicole and CP respectively finished first in the elite and 17-to-18-year-old categories.

Other local riders who finished top of the log in their categories were Casper John Venter (SPROGS, male), Anicka Nel (SPROGS, female), Heinrich Viljoen (sub-junior), Shellise Pieterse (15-year-old females), Edwin Simpson (15-year-old males), Royston Fernandez (16-year-old males), Bianca Oberholzer (16-year-old females), Shaun Constable (sub-vet males), Marnelle Pessegueiro (sub-vet females), Sarah Venter (vet females) and Johan van Dijkhorst (masters male).
