The winner of last year’s Two Countries Marathon, Zimbabwean Nkosiyazi Sibanda (32), did it again when he won the marathon for the second time last Saturday.
The marathon started in Zimbabwe and ended in Musina. It was well-attended by both South Africans and Zimbabweans.
Sibanda finished the race in 2:27:00, followed by Kundakwashe Kanduna in 2:30.40 and Charles Hoza, also from Zimbabwe, in 2:30.50.
In the women’s category, last year’s winner, Lizzy Chokera, from Zimbabwe won again, when she completed the race in 3:09:32.
Paul Manwa of Kenya, an athlete of the Toyota Athletics Club, won the half-marathon for men in 1:05.10. Calvin Pangiso, the winner of last year, finished second in 1:05: 24. Phathisa Ngwabi (Mr Price) ended third in 1:05:57. Olivia Chitachi (Zimbabwe) won the half-marathon for women, followed by Rofhiwa Mandiwana of Nedbank. Veteran Paulina Phoho finished the race in third place.
During the prize-giving ceremony, the mayor of the Musina Municipality, Cllr Carol Phiri, extended her congratulations to the participants. She added that they were working hard to ensure that next year's race will be bigger.
Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality. Kaizer was awarded the Mathatha Tsedu award in 2014.
