GIYANI – A fine of R20 000 was imposed on Bloemfontein Celtic and Dynamos each for bringing the league into disrepute. This was done by the league's disciplinary committee during its sitting in Johannesburg last Friday.
These sanctions follow an incident that took place during the match between the two teams at the Giyani Stadium three weeks ago.
The supporters of the two teams started throwing missiles at each other towards the end of the game and gunshots were fired from the pavilion shortly after the referee blew the final whistle. The situation was calmed by the intervention by the members of the SAPS who were at the stadium.
Although there was a contingent of police officers at the scene, the spokesperson for the police in the Lowveld, Capt Moatshe Ngoepe told Mirror that no arrest had been made in connection with the incident at the time of going to the press.
Dynamos wrote a report to the league in which they accused the supporters of Celtic of so-called bad conduct. During the hearing the two clubs failed to convince the committee as to whose supporters had fired the gunshots.
This forced the committee to impose a fine of R20 000 on the two clubs. The fine was wholly suspended for twelve months. It was during the same hearing where Alexandra United were cautioned and discharged for failing to find a venue for their game against Dobsonville All Nations.
Bloemfontein Young Tigers were found guilty of failing to control their fans during their home game against Dynamos. Tigers' fans invaded the pitch during the game at Seisa Ramabodu Stadium. A fine of R15 000 was imposed on them. It was also suspended for twelve months
