Dynamos and Celtic in dull draw

Sport  Date: 26 April 2002

GIYANI – Despite numerous attempts by the goal-poachers of Dynamos in the opening minutes, their Premier First Division match against Bloemfontein Celtic that was played at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday ended in a dull draw.

The first ten minutes saw three players' names going into referee Paulo Marques' book. Willem Vries and Christian Nwakorie, both from Celtic, were booked for rough tackles, while Lifa Qosha of Dynamos was reprimanded for a late tackle on Chris Tsotetsi.

The homeside soon realised that it was not their day when they missed three beautiful chances in the 12th, 16th and 20th minute respectively. The players who made the Dynamos fans jump up from their seats in disbelief were Jacky Ledwaba, Phumlani Dindi and Lefa Qosha.

The player who caused a real upset towards the end of the first half was Goodman Makhubela. He shot upright from the penalty box with the Celtic keeper, Nkosana Maseko, well beaten.

Dynamos made two substitutions in the last half. They introduced Timothy Nkosi and Soul Mmethi Lucas Maleka and Kenneth Motshumi respectively. The replacements proved to be a clever move on the part of the Dynamos technical staff but it was still difficult for them to find their way through the defence of Celtic.

Trouble erupted shortly after the referee's final whistle. Celtic fans started throwing various objects, including empty beer bottles at their Dynamos counterparts. Gunshots were also heard during the incident. The situation was calmed by the intervention of the members of the SAPS who were at the stadium.
