Mamelodi Sundowns dropped value points when they were unexpectedly beaten 1-0 by the struggling Polokwane City in an Absa Premiership match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.
City, the only team of Limpopo in the elite league, outclassed their more fancied opponents in all departments in the first half.
Sundowns fumbled at the goal finish on a continuous basis and could not complete promising moves. The killer-striker, Cuthberth Malajila, could not believe his eyes when his half-volley hit the woodwork and bounced back into the field of play. His team mate, Katlego Mashego, also disappointed the fans when he shot wide from close range after a square pass from Hlompho Kekana.
Sundowns lost cohesion late in the match, which gave City a good chance to score a goal. Thabo Rakhale forced his way through the defence of Sundowns and chipped the ball to Sphesihle Nzimande and Tebogo Lagerman of Sundowns scored anown goal when he tried to clear the ball.
The boys from Tswane approached the last quarter of the match like a house on fire, with their midfielders distributing some telling passes to strikers. Sundowns pressed hard in search of an equaliser, but they failed to break the defence of City.
City abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back. Thabelo Tshilo, captain of City, was everywhere and he was voted man of the match.
