Rockers continued to pave their way up the log by beating Gwamasenga United Brothers 1-0 in their MMK Funeral Services League match at the Gwamasenga grounds on Sunday.
United’s front runners, Ipfi Muthubi and Lesley Khomola, did not live up to the fans’ expectations as they were tightly marked. United Brothers threatened to score in the 11th minute. Muthubi won the loose ball in the 35-meter area and unleashed a volley just outside the penalty box. The ball missed the target by inches, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans.
The visitors from Makwarela knocked on the opponents’ door three minutes later. Emmanuel Neswiswi tried his luck from the edge of the box. United’s keeper, Rudzani Mmbengeni, stretched to the limit to execute a brilliant save.
Rockers were awarded a free kick in the 28th minute. Pfarelo Lifhiga headed home to put his side ahead. Hulisani Thanyani of Rockers was booked for a dangerous tackle on the United captain, Ntambudzeni Mundalamo, in the 35th minute. Mundalamo retaliated by hitting Thanyani with a fist on the head. Mundalamo was lucky not to see red, as he was given a mere tongue lashing.
Rendani Malange of Rockers was also lucky to escape with a yellow card after obstructing Alugumi Mulaudzi towards the end of the first half.
United Brothers introduced Rendani Sadiki and Fhumulani Mudau for Moses Makungo and Maxwell Makatu respectively early in the last half. Fhatuwani Nemusumani of United Brothers found himself on the wrong side of the law by tackling Mulisa Tshivhi from behind. He was reprimanded with a card. United Brothers were reduced to 10 men in the 84th minute. Fhumulani Mudau saw red for tackling Emmanuel Neswiswi from behind.
