The MMK Insurance Brokers local derby between the current log leaders, Makhitha Oscar Stars, and their younger brothers, Makhitha Iyarunga, ended in a 2-all draw on Sunday at the Makhitha grounds.
The match was well attended and drew more than 3000 spectators.
Stars were only good at the far back. Their mid fielders hesitated for too long and did not release the ball in time to feed the goal poachers. This sloppy performance put their defence under tremendous pressure. Iyarunga initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch, but they were denied a number of scoring opportunities by the impenetrable defence of their opponents.
Stars could have scored more than a dozen goals, had they managed to convert all their chances. Iyarunga's striker, Norman Managa, missed a clear chance in the 30th minute. His team mate, Philimon Maalazwanda, committed a similar blunder two minutes later. The half-time score was nil-nil.
Stars started the second half as if they were going to bury their opponents alive. Their breakthrough came in the 49th minute when Marubini Moupa caught the Iyarunga keeper, Moses Mabeba, off guard and beat him with a volley.
Iyarunga did not stop fighting, despite conceding a goal. They continued to play like an organised team until the wheel of fortune turned in their favour. Their equalizing goal came in the 57th minute. Livhuwani Thonga scored from a free kick, after Patrick Rambuda had been brought down.
The spectators had reason to applaud when Takalani Mbekwa of Stars was on target, following a neat pass from Baro Sebola. Stars' celebration was cut short when Norman Managa equalised late in the match.
