BA-PHALABORWA – “Limpopo Province has all the facilities to host any national tournament,” said the MEC for Sports Arts and Culture, Mr Joe Maswanganyi.

He was the guest speaker during the prize-giving ceremony that was held at the end of the Safa Castle Regional League play-off tournament, which was staged at the Lulekani Stadium near Ba-Phalaborwa on Sat-urday.

Maswanganyi appealed to the South African Football Association (Safa) and other organisations to consider staging their national tournaments in this province, saying the fact that last week’s tournament was a huge success was a clear indication that Limpopo has all what it takes for a province to stage any tournament.

The champions for the tournament, Mbekweni Sundowns, became R12 000 richer. They were also awarded with two trophies and gold medals. Their striker, Treswill Overmeer, was the winner of the Player of the Tournament award. He took home a cheque amounting to R3 000 and a trophy.

The runner-up, Soweto United Football Club, who lost 0-2 to Mbekeni Sundowns in the finals, received R8 000, silver medals and a trophy. Kwamashu All Stars were the winners of the third prize and received an amount of R5 000 and bronze medals during the glittering ceremony.

Transwerk Football Club, who were beaten 0-1 by Kwamashu All Stars in their losers’ final match on Saturday, took home a cheque to the value of R3 000. The striker for Soweto United Football Club, Thlokiso Motaung, was the top goal scorer in the tournament. He scored five goals during the tournament and received R2 000 and a trophy for his achievement.

The best player for each match received a cheque of R300. Nine teams, Mbekweni Sundowns, Soweto United, Camela Young Killers, Eersterus Kings, Breidbach Sporting, Kwamashu All Stars, Tigers Chiefs, Everest Young Killers and Transwerk Football Club took part in the tournament.
