Vhutalu Mountain Rangers are still celebrating after they were crowned the 2014 champions of the NJ Munyamela Soccer Challenge last Sunday. They beat Thenzheni Liverpool 2-1 in the final that was staged at the Muhuyu XI Experience grounds.
Rangers received R2 500 during a ceremony held at the ground shortly after the final. The runners-up, Thenzheni Liverpool, went home with R2 000 and Matangari Rising Stars, who finished the tournament in third place, received R1 500. The fourth-placed Muhuyu Copper Stars received R1 000.
Copper Stars lost 1-2 to Matangari Rising Stars in their losers’ final match, which was played at the same venue shortly before the final.
The teams that were booted out of the tournament in the quarterfinal stage were each given a consolation prize of R200. The recipients of the consolation prizes are: Maraxwe Happy Boys, Tshiombo XI Experience, Matangari Vultures and Matangari High Aims. Sixteen teams took part in this year’s tournament.
A representative from the sponsor, Mr Tshililo Nengwenda, indicated that he was impressed by the manner in which the tournament was run this year. He revealed that his company will continue to sponsor the tournament in coming years, saying the sponsorship would also increase from time to time.
Frank is a Human Resources Manager at the Department of Public Works in Limpopo. He is the longest serving correspondent of the Mirror, having joined us at the end of 1990. He mainly writes sports reports and resides at Tsianda Village. In 2004, Frank won the National Castle League Award, an award for the best reporter in the SAB league in South Africa.
