Madombidzha Try Again proceeded to the next stage of the Spar soccer tournament when they beat Tshiozwi Mates 4-1 in a replay match at Gogobole on Sunday.
The winner was determined by penalty shoot-out as the score was 1-1 after regular time.
Try Again deserved the victory as they were dictating terms in all departments. The players who continuously gave the Mates' defence a tough time were Jeff Machete and Makgetsi Thulare.
Takalani Libada, a defender of Mates, was booked for an illegal tackle on Ndamulelo Phathela. The Mates' keeper, Andries Masingi, denied the opponents several sure goals through his acrobatic goalkeeping.
The Madombidzha lads did not panic, despite squandering numerous scoring chances in the opening minutes. Their roving midfielder, Dakalo Ramuthivheli, suffered the pain of watching his long-range volley go off target and miss the net by inches. Elton Mulaudzi committed a similar blunder a little later.
No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts by the Try Again goal poachers. The last half saw Mates invade the opponents’ territory for long periods. Mashudu Nengovhela of Mates opened their account in the 60th minute. He unleashed a powerful shot from inside the box after a heartbreaking scramble. The celebration was cut short when Jeff Machete's effort hit the back of the net to level the score.
Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality. Kaizer was awarded the Mathatha Tsedu award in 2014.
