Tshakhuma RO win Wafawafa tournament

Sport  Date: 12 September 2014

Although Tshakhuma RO United failed to book a place in the final of the Amos Charity Shield Soccer Tournament, they have something to be proud of. They were crowned the champions of the Wafawafa Soccer Tournament at the Shayandima High School grounds last Saturday.

Three teams, Tshakhuma RO United, Tshedza FC and the hosts, Shayandima Silver Stars, took part in the one-day event.

Polokwane United, who were supposed to be part of the tournament, failed to honour the invitation. Polokwane’s failure to show up forced the organizers to change the playing format from knock-out to round robin.

The opening match was between Tshedza FC and Shayandima Silver Stars. Stars could not absorb the pressure and Tshedza easily beat them 3-1.

In the next match, Tshakhuma RO United, or the “Guptas Family” as they are affectionately called, battled it out with Shayandima Silver Stars. The score was 1-1 when the referee blew the final whistle. The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. Tshakhuma RO United scored five from the penalty spot and Silver Stars converted four.

RO United met Tshedza in the final later in the afternoon. This one also ended in a 1-1 draw and the winner was determined through penalty shoot-out. Again RO United converted all their five chances while Tshedza scored four. As it was a winner-takes-all tournament, Tshakhuma RO United were presented with a cash prize of R1 200.
