Lufule Flying Bombers started the new season on a high note when they beat Ngwenani Manchester United 2-1 in the MMK Funeral Services League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday. Both sides squandered numerous scoring chances in the first 30 minutes of the game. Flying Bombers were the first to disappoint their fans.
Their slender striker, Tshililo Nthangeni, missed a fortune when he fumbled at the goal finish just outside the box. At that stage, the keeper of Manchester United, Avhatakali Mmbengeni, was already beaten. Manchester United also had their chance. Their left flank, Malia Mulaudzi, could not believe his eyes when his half-volley went a little wide.
No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts by both sides. Aluwani Tshivhase of United, who replaced Mpho Ramudingane earlier in the last half, was reprimanded with a card in the 55th minute.
Bombers took the lead in the 59th minute. Elekanyani Mukomafhedzi connected Lucky Mphaphuli’s square pass. United did not throw in the towel without a fight. They patiently created several moves from behind in their search for the equalizer. They continued to fight like a team even after their key player, Thilivhali Thiba, was cautioned for dangerous play in the 64th minute.
Mmboniseni Mukondeleleli scored the equalizer for Manchester in the 67th minute. He headed home, following a square pass from Takalani Ratshitanga. Ngudo Mashau of Manchester and Rofhiwa Tshilanga of Flying Bombers were warned with yellow cards for exchanging blows.
Bombers reclaimed the lead in the 78th minute. Hulisani Khangale was on target with a long-range volley. The keeper of Manchester United, Avhatakali Mmbengeni, palmed the ball back into the net while trying to save a goal.
