GIYANI – Dynamos Football Club have threatened to boycott their Absa Cup quarterfinal match against Orlando Pirates if the Premier Soccer League (PSL) goes ahead with its plans to take the match to the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
Dynamos are accusing the league of taking sides with Orlando Pirates after realizing that the league has decided to make them forfeit their home ground advantage by taking the match to Polokwane without their knowledge. According to the team’s managing director, Pat Malabela, there is no need for a draw if the league has the powers to decide on the venues without the knowledge of the club that has won the home ground advantage.
“Look, we have won the home ground advantage during the draws and the match should be played at our home ground, Giyani Stadium,” said Malabela. In an interview, the league’s PRO, Andrew Dipela, stated that their decision to take the match to Polokwane was influenced by the fact that the Giyani Stadium is too small to accommodate the anticipated huge crowd.
In response to that, Malabela stated that the league’s argument was not based on facts, saying the Giyani Stadium is far bigger than the Peter Mokaba Stadium. He said that if the league was really concerned about the size of the Giyani Stadium, they should have switched the match to Thohoyandou Stadium, which is by far bigger than both the Peter Mokaba and Giyani Stadium.
Malabela revealed that he was going to write a letter to the league notifying them to reverse what he called an “uninformed decision”. He further stated that if the league stands firm on their deci-sion to see the match being played in Polokwane, his club will not honour the fixture.
“We are playing at the Giyani or Thohoyandou Stadium and if not, the league must declare the match a walkover for Pirates,” he said. The match will be played on Sunday, April 17. The other quarterfinal fixtures are: Santos vs Bush Bucks, Supersport United vs Mamelodi Sundowns and Wits University vs Moroka Swallows.
