Munangwe United Brothers booked a place in the final of the MTG and PIB Soccer Challenge by beating Mukula Mighty Killers 7-5 in their semifinal match at the Makwarela Stadium last Sunday.
Although Mighty Killers conceded two silly goals in the opening minutes of the game, they did not throw in the towel. United Brothers played attacking football from the first whistle. Pressure continued to mount on the defence of Killers as the game progressed.
Killers conceded a corner kick in the 12th minute. Jeffrey Mabasa scored from the corner spot. The ball hit the back of the net without any further touch. The goal injected more fighting spirit into the strikers of United Brothers.
They initiated several promising moves from the middle of the park. Their efforts did not pass without reward as they scored their second goal in the 19th minute. Khethani Netshishivhe beat the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way.
Ntakadzeni Matshivha of United Brothers was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He obstructed Tshenuwani Maphege just outside the box.
The wheel of fortune turned against United Brothers in the opening minutes of the last half. Mighty Killers pulled one back in the 55th minute. Tshenuwani Maphege forced his way through the defence of United Brothers and beat the keeper with a half volley.
United Brothers effected two changes to their original squad in a bid to neutralize the opponents, but the move worked against them as Mighty Killers found the equalizer in the 68th minute. The score was 2-2 when the referee blew the final whistle and the winner was determined through penalty shoot-out.
United Brothers converted all their five chances, while Mighty Killers scored three. United Brothers will meet Arsenal FC in the final at the Makhuvha Stadium next Tuesday, June 16.
