Muraleni United proceeded to the final of the Winter Soccer Challenge after beating Tshikota United Stars 2-1 in the semifinal at the Makhitha grounds on Sunday.
United displayed entertaining football. Stars were only good at the far back, but their midfielders held onto the ball for too long. The boys from Muraleni initiated some promising moves from the centre of the pitch, but the strong defence of Stars denied them several opportunities.
United broke the deadlock in the 34th minute. Takalani Mawelewele forced his way through the defence of Stars and scored the only goal of the first half from close range. Victor Madovhe of Stars made a huge blunder when he shot wide from close range after receiving a neat pass from Thabo Mungalo in the 54th minute.
As if that was not enough to increase the blood pressure of the fans, Madovhe caused another upset three minutes later. He shot aimlessly from outside the box, much to the disappointment of the supporters.
They continued to pressure their opponents by creating promising moves from the centre of the pitch. Takalani Mawelewele tried his luck from outside the penalty box with a volley. The Stars keeper could only watch the ball hit the net to bring the half-time score to 2-0.
Stars reduced the margin late in the game through Hilton Tshivhula.
