The Makhitha ground was packed to capacity last Sunday when Makhitha Iyarunga were booted out of the Winter Soccer Challenge by Zamenkomste United.
They played to a 1-all draw and United won the penalty shoot-out 4-2.
The Makhitha team could have sealed the game within the first 15minutes, but their strikers seemed to have left their scoring boots at home. At that stage, the United defenders were running for cover.
Realizing that the opposition were all over them, United abandoned their positions to solidify their defence for a moment and left Khakhu Tshilinga as the lone striker. The strategy worked for them as Iyarunga’ technical staff seemed to have run out of ideas for the better part of the first half.
Things turned against Iyarunga shortly after United introduced their tall backline player, Vhutshilo Mafunisa, towards the end of the first half. He was a marvel to watch and provided the spark for Iyarunga.
Baldwin Sinugo of United was warned with a card for obstruction two minutes into the last half. Shumani Mudau of Iyarunga was also reprimanded for a similar infringement five minutes later.
Deshin Monyeleote of Iyarunga was lucky to get away with just a yellow card. He handled the ball intentionally in front of the assistant referee. Euclid Kobuone of Iyarunga unleashed a volley from just outside the box to make the score 1-0.Vhutshilo Mafunisa of United equalised with a header after the corner kick taken by Mpho Mavhandu.
United should have scored the winning goal, but Mpho Mavhandu's shot missed the goal mouth by inches.
