On 15 August, Stanford Lake College near Haenertsburg will be hosting the “Tour de Lake” leg of the Limpopo DebtSafe Schools MTB Series.
Different schools in the province participated in the first leg of the series, the “Tour de Gat” in Phalaborwa. More than 220 cyclists participated in this event and the competition is getting intense. Louis Trichardt High School’s cycling team did exceptionally well in Phalaborwa and although it is still early in the series, several Triegie cyclists could see themselves chosen for the provincial team.
“Mountain biking is one of South Africa’s fastest growing sports because it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. You can do it alone or with your friends and if you want to, you can involve your whole family to participate, everyone at his or her own level,” says Hein du Plessis, MD of DebtSafe.
“The series has increased tremendously in popularity this year, and we are expecting more than 220 participants at the next event,” says du Plessis.
Secondary as well as primary schools are invited to participate. Children will race around the 4km to 6km XCO course, depending on their ages. Great prizes are up for grabs and the top cyclists will represent Limpopo at the Spur National Championships in Magaliesburg later this year.
Du Plessis continues: “DebtSafe is passionate about promoting a healthy lifestyle as well as providing healthy competition platforms for children. When children are encouraged to be healthy and fit, they generally blossom in all aspects of their lives.”
