Magezi FC will try their luck against the Absa Premiership side, Bidvest Wits, in the next round of the prestigious Nedbank Cup after the draw that was held at the Carlton Hotel last Thursday.
The good news for the fans of Magezi is that it will be their home fixture. Magezi’s way to the Top-16 stage went via EC Bees FC, whom they beat 2-1 at the Buffalo City Stadium in East London two weeks ago.
The head coach of Magezi, Mr Joel Mongalo, is confident about his charges' chances to upset the Clever Boys, saying that the students will get the shock of a lifetime if they underestimate them. He said that they wanted to prove to all football fanatics that they had not reached the last-16 stage by default. “We are the only ABC Motsepe League side left in the competition, so we have the responsibility to represent the league well,” he said.
Mongalo further indicated that their wish was to play against Mamelodi Sundowns or Orlando Pirates at this stage of the competition. He said that playing against a strong side would assist them to measure their level of readiness for the promotional play-offs. Magezi are currently leading the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League and chances for them to secure a place in the promotional playoffs are good.
Black Aces will host Maritzburg United in their Nedbank Cup encounter, while Polokwane City will play against Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg. Santos will host Free State Stars at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town. Baroka FC will travel to Durban, where they will play against Golden Arrows.
Supersport United and University of Pretoria will meet at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in their Pretoria derby and Jomo Cosmos will take on Orlando Pirates. Cosmos lost 0-5 to Orlando Pirates in their league match last weekend.
The Absa Premiership League pace setters, Mamelodi Sundowns, will take on Mbombela United.
